Unit 70 Computer Game Story Development

Game Story Development

Storytelling

Cave Paintings
Cave paintings is probably one of the earliest forms of storytelling. It was a time before languages and writing. They used paintings on walls to tell stories long time ago. It could have even been a sign to warn them or telling them of the past and what had happened. It would even be simple stories made up for the entertainment for the children, it would often be a way to educate children.

Oral Traditions
Oral Traditions was the next generation of story telling but it was through using speech, due to languages coming around this era. People would often be in large groups together as the population grew bigger and people talked with one another telling each other stories which they would pass on and on, it would spread. This was before literary communication was even formed. Oral traditions was used in many different ways such as stories passing group to group or changing and adapting or ending up to how Oral tradition is used today such as campfire stories which were in fact popular and used by tribes

Fable
Fable is a story which was a simple short one. It would generally include animals which has some sort of lesson to it, a moral lesson often told to young children. The most popular and well known fable stories would be 'Aesop's Fables' (Aesop being a slave in Ancient Greek times). They had told many short moral stories to people and the stories would be passed throughout the generations. They would be written and had stayed very popular for many years. Fable's started before text storytelling even existed yet it was still carried on throughout the ages.

Myth
A myth story was mainly about the creation of the world or about Gods/Goddesses and higher beings, or Mythical characters (Meaning made up characters). Myths began in the Ancient Greek times just like fables. Even though they had no facts behind them, they were an opinion on the creation and existence of this world. The Minotaur or Medusa would intertwine which such stories told. They are both mythical creatures and are also higher beings.

Legend
A Legends is a historical story that would be told to show bravery, courage honesty etc. Being the the human characteristics. Stories such as King Arthur are legends that represent the characteristics of power, bravery and betrayal. It is also a very well known and presented in other story telling ways in today's day in age. The stories are based on real people and not fabricated but would be rather exaggerated and/or changed to show some heroism or a major event to show something. They had also been passed on throughout the generations in many forms of storytelling ways. They would have changed over the time for it to make sense on where and when we are in the day and age.

Theatre
Theatre would a storytelling form that would have an audience. It was the next form to telling a story with acting rather than orally telling someone. It was to give off a far more better interpretation of the story. It began in the Ancient Greece, they would perform stories in a giant amphitheatre which were in a large bowl shape that allowed the sound of the voices to  travel through the massive amounts of audiences. Even though the stories told before such as Oral traditions contained audiences it was still a jump from that sort of storytelling age.
Theatre was much more of an interactive form of storytelling. The actors would often engage with the audience encouraging them to join in and interact with them in later years. They would do so by shouting famous catch phrases or trying to offer their help the protagonist on the stage.
A big example of a the theatre is Shakespeare's work such as Romeo and Julliet.

Text
Storytelling through text and adapted over a long time since it first started. Back when languages were being used and had began to develop into being written. It wasn't the most ideal form of storytelling due to its time consumption. Another issue was that only one person was able to read the story at a time but even worse not many could even read or write. When printing press was created Text began to become popular. It meant that books could be made in mass amounts. When transport developed they even began to make their way across the sea's, the book that is. As text developed over the years it changed from being hand written, to printing presses and ended up to be done through computers and mobiles.
Text styled stories at our day in age, are the only ones that could be copyrighted due to being able to have written proof to whom owned the idea.
There are many examples of big text based stories, but some big modern examples would be book series' such as Harry Potter, The Hobbit etc. These are up to date examples of how text is still a very large part of storytelling today but how all also still link to each other, as these are some of the text stories that have been transformed into the film form of storytelling.

Film/Tv
Film and TV is the most recent form of the story telling  since technology has risen so much. It uses  visual and audio forms of story telling. In the 1880's film first came out as a bunch of images being projected. It allows anything to be filmed and created into a story to be soon shown towards a large audience. Creating a film would be most successful choosing one of a few structures to possibly make. Such as Lord of the Rings they use quite a surreal structure but only stick to that to create such a successful film I could watch many times and not get bored. TV came later after film when the development of technology raised, TV was becoming cheaper than film. TV's were made for the comfort of home, not given the chance while in the cinema's. TV is obviously also a visual and audio form of story telling and can also be copyrighted like text forms.
TV is different compared to film since it always has an ongoing story which would possibly never end. Soap operas are a big example of a never ending story.

Game Genres

Platformer

A platform game also known as a platformer is a video games that consists of an avatar jumping across platforms, over obstacles or both to get through the game. These sorts of challenges are also known as jumping puzzles or freerunning. The player would control the protagonist to avoid falling or missing the needed jumps to get through the game. A games which is quite familiar to this sort of style would possible be Mario or Super Meat Boy.

Role Play

A RPG also known as Roleplaying game is a game in which players take the roles of their characters specialties for example: a tank class is the damage taker, a bruiser is a damage dealer and the healer well that's obvious, heals their team. They take the responsibility for acting out these roles within the game. Actions taken within games can either succeed or fail following the formal system of rules and guidelines within the game. There are many forms of RPG's within the media world but also in the real world. LARPing is one form used within reality, it is known as 'Live Action Role Play' they would take the physical form of their characters role and would perform it in real life. In Animecon this would sorta happen within the festival style such as lets say, Naruto and Sasuke. They're friends but also rivals there would challenge each other in reality to see who is best, I would call this larping.
Other forms of RPG's exist within the computer world, such as MMORPG's (Massively multiplayer online role-playing games) or even an offline role-playing video games. Within offline RPG's the character can possibly be customized and they would take on quests and challenges throughout the game play to move on with the story. As for MMORPG's you would take quests and challenges to gain experience  level up and become a high level PVPer.
An example of an offline RPG would be a game called Dragon Age: Origins. A game I have played and enjoyed very much because of its style of gameplay being a RPG.
An example of an MMORPG would be Perfect world, Runescape, WoW and many others just as offline RPG's have a wide range of games.

First-Person Shooter

First-person shooter also known as a FPS is a video game genre that is mainly portrayed with guns and projectile weapon-based combat. It would be in a first person form, which is highly obvious because its within the name. It would give the players an experience the action through the eyes of the protagonist. First-person shooters are pretty much in common with other FPS's, they all fall under the category of an action game. FPS range from having multiplayer modes or being a story styled game in which you would generally follow a linear story. I have played a game where options within the story do effect it, which being in Black Ops 2, I found it such an amazing game with having the options and facing the consequences of making such options. It makes you want to play the game over to check out the other options.
Call of Duty is a famous multiplayer game in which players vs players of a matter of skill with the aiming and shooting also reflects on your reflects skills.

3rd person shooter

A 3rd person shooter is a game that is and 3D action game in which the character that is player is visible on the screen. The gameplay would as like the FPS consists of a mainly shooting. These games are quite similar to FPS, which contains the perspective of the player to an avatar. They both have their own genres. While the allows the players to aim without the avatar to get in their way, the third-person shooter show the avatar from a over the shoulder shot or behind the back perspective. A great example of a game in which this styles takes on board is Gears of War.

Racing Games

A racing game is a game in which the player can look in a first-person or third-person perspective, in which the player takes part in a racing competition on any sort of base such as air racing or sea racing and of course land racing. Many games are pretty much based on real-world racing such as Forza or Midnight Club. Some racing games can go under the genre of sports.

Fighting

Fighting game is a genre in which the player controls a character on the screen and in which engages in a close combat fight with an opponent. The characters would often be of same skill and power and the matches would consist of several rounds. The player must learn techniques within this gaming style such as to block, counter attack and combined attacks to create combos.

Adventure

Adventure games is a game which consists of a protagonist of where the player takes his role and goes through an interactive story of exploration and puzzle solving. The genre focuses to draw away from the narrative-based style such as literature and film. Majority of adventure games which can be either text or graphic based are designed for a single user. Since this focuses on the story and characters would make it difficult to have multi-players.

Puzzle

A puzzle is a type of genre which focuses on the puzzle solving. There are multiple types of puzzle games which consist of logic, sequence solving, word completion, pattern or recognition. These games are to test ones mind.

Simulation

Simulation games is a genre which is designed to closely simulate the aspects of real life or fictional reality. The games attempt to copy the activities real life has to offer. Games vary from training, analysis or prediction. In these types of games there is generally no goal to be reached. Well known examples of games are war games, business games and role play simulation.

Sports

Sports games are supposed to represent the real life world games such as football, ice hockey, rugby or even a racing game (Which also has its own genre). Most sports games consist of a team sport, athletics, extreme sports and combat sports. Some games, highly emphasize on the actual playing of the sport such as Fifa 2015 or UFC. Where as other games emphasize on strategy and organization such as, Championship manager. Some are create the sport game to emphasize on the comic effect such as Need For Speed.

Approaches To Games

Location
Location is a major importance to a game, it sets the scene and allows the gamer to not be so confused of what is happening. If you were to put lets say a fantasy scene in a realistic war game, the game would lose a lot of interest due to lack of consistence throughout the game.

Three-Act Structure
Three-act structure is a model in which a screenwriting is divided into fictional narrative of three parts. This is often called the setup, confrontation and the resolution. This is an effective way to approach a story because it allows you to fill them three parts without getting confused as to where story within the game will be plotted.
The first act, is usually to create the beginning of the story of which would consist of the characters, their relationships and the world they live in. Later in the first act it would be a start to establish, a dynamic, on-screen incident that occurs in the story which would effect the protagonist and would lead them to a more dramatic situation, attempting to have dealt with the first incident, this is known as first turning point. Which would usually consist of 3 different ways it could turn.First option being signals that would end the first act. The second option would be ensuring that the life of the protagonist would never be the same and the final option would be a dramatic question that would be answered in the climax of the game, the question that would lead the protagonist to action.
The second act, also known as the rising action. This act would generally consist the protagonist attempting to resolve the problem that occurred in the first act but leading them to a more worse situation. A part of why the protagonist cannot proceed on with the story is lacking the skill to confront and deal the forces of the antagonist. Not only is the skill required to move on but to find higher sense of awareness of who they actually are and what they could possibly be capable of. A good game I thought of which I can recall having this act in is Dragon Age Origins, the protagonist is to found out that they're the last Grey Warden alive and must develop the skill and level to beat the Archdemon.
The protagonist cannot always best the antagonist alone and would usually be aided and abetted by mentors or co-protagonists. This also brings to mind Dragon Age Origins, the protagonist gains the help of 3 co-protagonists which have an important role in the game.
Finally, the third act which would contain the resolution of the story and its subplots. The climax is the scene or sequence in which holds the stories intense and most important part of the story/game. This is the point in which that dramatic question from the first act to be finally answered, leaving the protagonist and the characters among the story to gain a new sense of who they are.

How Story Is Used In Games

Using a story within a game can create so much depth between the gamer and the game. With a story there must be characters, characters which could have an effect on the game, Such as killing an innocent person could effect the story later such as Skyrim. Some story games want you to feel for the characters, giving some emotion towards them, making them want to risk everything to keep them alive throughout a story. But what comes a good character must contain a bad, if you want the story to develop throughout, having a bad guy within a story would make the gamer want to reach the end of the story to see how the bad character would be killed or some sort of ending containing the bad character. Having them would create some emotion towards them, not of nice emotion but of despite and anger towards them for them to want to proceed on to the story and have him meet his justice.

A game I know very well is The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Not only does this game contain a story but it also casts off little stories to mix in with it. Giving side quests in which you would help a citizen or help a king gain something. This story is big on its story.
The story contains, gangs, guilds, bandits, dragons and the main character of the story of most importance. Throughout the game you will hit the major choices which effect the future gameplay. It works effective for the gamer to have the option allowing them as much freedom as possible. Having such a split off in story changes can alter the ending, making the gamer want to play again and have a different ending.
Some gamers, like to see what would happen in each different effect the game has to offer. Such as myself. I found this game has a big story to it of which takes multiple hours to complete and options that you would soon either regret or move on from.

Story So Far

My Story

The story starts off with a dark gloomy night, far away from the city. Three students who have just moved away get settled into their new homely apartment. The three students were in fact friends from many years ago, one male and two females. They weren’t the most usual friends one another could have with their odd relationships. They have been friends for many years but for Bella, one of the females, she has always had an odd relationship with the other female, Jodie. She would often get jealous with the guys and girls she would be out on dates with years before, it would almost seem she had a crush on her. The male, Zess, never had an interest in either of them only ever wanted to be friends, he was a quiet guy, motionless to be fair. He wasn’t the type people would want to walk up to, but he didn’t mind that.
In the living room watching the TV, having pizza and just chilling as friends do. The friends had begun their senior year in college, skipping the party for all students to know each other they wanted to settle in. It was a dark night, around 12 o’clock when they were watching TV. This night was a weird night out of many. The sky wasn’t black, it was red. Zess, almost dosing off to the TV after having helping all day with helping his friends unpack their stuff as well as his own. As his eyes kept dropping and going through mid-sleep, the wind picked up and blew the curtains open. It had woken him up. He had jumped up ‘’what on earth is that?’’ Walking towards the window and look up towards the dark red sky.
‘’What is that?’’ Bella replied, walking over towards the window with Jodie
The news came into shocking news and interrupted every channel on air, the three friends walked towards the TV to get a better look. Jodie was hugging into Bella slightly frightened.
‘’Shocking news, the sky has now become red’’ Images appear on the screen as the news reporter talks about the sky ‘’it has been led to believe that global warming is the cause of this says scientist Niko’’
Niko begins to explain what has happened ‘’this is the cause of years of global warming, but this shouldn’t have happened so soon. It seems 50 years of global warming have been combined into one day worth’’
The camera moves over to a red light beam shooting towards the sky, it was unclear as to what it is that is shooting up. The news reporter explains ‘’there is this red be-‘’
The news report had been cut off, going fuzzy. ‘’Oh my god, what is happening?’’ Jodie shouted in a scared voice
‘’Calm down Jodie, I am here’’ Bella smiles down at her as she hugs her.
‘’As am I’’ Zess said sharply ‘’what do you think the cause of this is?’’
Bella looked towards Zess and shrugged ‘’I have no idea’’ She sighed.
The TV was making a fuzzy noise until it went blank and suddenly a man in a mask appeared on TV ‘’Good evening citizens of Teropia, I am Dr Grazil. I see you have noticed my GlobeRay?’’ He smirked and laughed ‘’Well, I think it’s time to explain my plan. I am putting 100 years’ worth of global warming into this one single night. I will have corrupted this world by 7amthis morning and there is nothing you can do to stop me, if there is any attempt in trying to destroy my machine I will kill each hostage I have’’
The camera moves over towards the hostages, showing all their faces. Bella stared in silent.
‘’B-Bella, isn’t that your mum and sister?’’ Jodie asked, looking up towards Bella’s face as she noticed a slight tear in her eye.
Zess looked at Bella and said in an angry voice ‘’what is this guy’s purpose?’’
Bella looked towards Zess and noticed that he had gained an emotion of anger which she had never saw within him. She thought ‘’I must save my family’’
‘’What will we do Zess and Bella?’’ Asked Jodie
Still listening to the TV ‘’If you want to save these hostages and this world there is only but one option to solve this situation’’ Dr Grazil said deeply ‘’I want 1 billion pounds, dropped off to me in suitcases by 5am at the latest. Otherwise, I will kill everyone but myself and my minions in the world’’
‘’How will it not kill him?’’ Jodie looked confused.
‘’I guess he created an antidote, he clearly thought this through’’ Growled Zess.
‘’I must save them. I will go alone, I will not put you guy’s at risk’’ Angrily said Bella
Both friends replied ‘’No, we will go with you’’
They exchanged looks and all nodded ‘’we are one’’
The TV suddenly cut off and went back to the reporter who looked at the camera in fear ‘’I-I… We are doomed. Someone must stop them, it won’t be me’’ The camera cut off and went back to the new studio who was also in fear.

The TV suddenly cut off, the three friends were just looking at one another as if they need to come up with a plan. ‘’What will we do Bella?’’ Said Zess
‘’I don’t know’’ She sighed ‘’I don’t know what we can do, leave it to the government?’’
Bella had begun to think ‘Can I do anything? I build for a living, I want to become a master builder. What am I if I don’t help?’
Jodie looked at them both and pulled out her spanner ‘’we got to stop them, use 3. We are all builders here, right?’’
Bella looked down on her ‘Even the smallest out of the group is determined’. Bella smiled and pulled out her drill ‘’we have to save the world, we are master builders!’’ All three of them cheered.
They had come up with a plan to stop this evil villain. After an hour of discussion on what they had to do and how they would do it, they walked into the garage and had a predicament. What vehicle would they take? The car would take longer and is more obvious but they can take all three people. Whereas the motorbike was far quicker and smaller so it was more discrete but it could only take another friend. They had exchanged looks.
Zess had said ‘’we want to get there quicker’’ He sighed ‘’They are your parents Bella, do you want to get to them faster or do you want to stick together so we can take down this evil guy for good?’’
Bella was unsure on what she wanted to do. Would she take the car or will she take the motorbike.
‘’I will stay if you choose the bike, I won’t allow Jodie to stay behind. She is only little’’
Jodie shook her head ‘’No, I am the weak link here’’ She looked down to the ground at her feet ‘’I will only get in the way’’

Bella had finally thought of what she will do and looked at her friends and explained to them ‘’I will take the car, I want us all to be there’’. She looked out the window towards the light beam and thought ‘I just hope my mother and sister are just safe’. They all get in the car and leave the student area.

Peer Assessment
Scott Manuel -
Ben, so far you have created a good start to your story. I like your character choices and how they interact with each other. The story so far is gripping and seems quite fun. I havent seen where there might be a choice that will come in to play for the reader. Hopefully when you carry on with it, it will become non-linear. But so far, good job Ben!

Story No.2
It’s been 16 years since the corruption of the world. The world had its D-Day, that day wasn’t even the worst day. It’s the time after, lack of food, lack of water. Human society is no more, no government, no police, and no health care, no anything. Survival of the fittest I’ve always said it is. I’m Arabella, I was born before the destruction of the world, and I saw it all happen. My mother had died giving birth to me and it was only my father and I, but he couldn’t cope so he left me when I was 16, which was almost 8 years ago now. Having my father leave me at that age it made me stronger, I was alone for most of my years until I met my 2 friends, Niko and Yuri. They have been with me for quite some time, we survive together living off the bare minimum. I wouldn’t have made if it weren’t for them. I was 19 and I was stealing off a merchant, I was hungry, I needed food and the only way was to steal it. The merchant caught me, him and his thugs threatened to chop my arm off and keep me as their slave but luckily Yuri and Niko came in and got me away, I owe them my life.
‘’Hey Arabella, stop reading your journal and come give us a hand’’
‘’Alright Niko, give me a second’’ Arabella replied.
Yuri shouted ‘’we can’t hold this any longer!! Hurry up!’’
Arabella, walked over to help them both block up the door.
‘’Urgh, there!’’ Arabella said ‘’All done’’
Niko nodded ‘’we can stay here the night’’
Arabella went back to her journal. Where was I? Ah yes, my friends, Niko is 29. He’s the oldest in the group we kinda made him the leader but we won’t ever tell him otherwise it’ll get over his head. Yuri is the youngest, she’s 22. We were all pretty young when D-day happened, but we lived. Almost three quarters of the population was wiped out in one night. The sun had burned many people to chrisp where as many were lucky enough to survive with scars to show them of the past. The only way we have survived was because I have a secret, one that could save humanity entirely. Far in the east is a laboratory but it’s taken so taken multiple years to travel without any transportation.
‘’Arabella, we must rest now’’ whispered Niko. ‘’It’s getting late.’’
‘’One moment’’ Replied Arabella.
We can’t live in peace anymore, we must always be weary of what is to come, and bandits enjoy seeking out the weak. We may not be weak but…
‘’WE KNOW YOU’RE IN THERE’’ Hysterically laughed a bandit.
‘’Oh no, they found us. Quick grab the bat’’ Whispered Niko
‘’Got it’’ Arabella’’ Whispered back.
‘’Come out, come out. We only want to play’’
‘’Arabella. We have two options, we sneak out and try to find another place to sleep but who knows what’s out there. Or we fight’’ Questioned Niko
‘’I-I dunno…’’ hesitatingly said Arabella ‘’what do you think Yuri?’’
Yuri was scared, you could see it in her eyes. Her skin was pale from fear, she didn’t want to die. Not yet anyway, she wanted to die naturally of old age with a husband.
‘’You say… I don’t know what to do. I can’t fight, but I want to rest. My legs hurt very much’’
‘’We stand and fight’’ Niko smirked and looked out the window. ‘’There is only 7 of them, but if you sneak behind them we can do it’’
Arabella nodded and began to sneak around the bandits, while doing so a few bandits have been sneaking around. The 3 friends were caught off guard, while Arabella and Niko snuck around the bandits a few other bandits snuck around the back. As they entered the abandoned house, Yuri was looking out the window oblivious as to what was happening.
Yuri turned around and screamed ‘’Get away from me!’’
‘’Hey there little lady’’ Laughed the head bandit ‘’All we wanted was your food but now I want you’’
He smirked and grabbed her and bound her up around her mouth, hands and legs so she was unable to get away. Both Niko and Arabella heard her short scream, quickly rushing in for the sneak attack taking out 4 of the 7 bandits. The bandits quickly dashed to their van taking Yuri with them, she looked at both her friends dead in the eye, it was the eye look of a scared women.
‘’YURI! We will find you!’’ Shouted Niko. He quickly ran towards the house to grab their things.
‘’how will we find her?’’ Asked Arabella
‘’Follow the van tracks, I used to be ex-military. Remember?’’
‘’Ah yes, I remember but they taught you to track down?’’
‘’If we wanted our target secured then we did what we could’’ Nodded Niko.

The 2 friends set off to look for their friend Yuri, following the tracks entirely to an abandoned Prison. It was fully guarded by a bunch of bandits. They must’ve been convicts before the corruption of the world. They were wielded with guns, blades, knives. Where did they get it all from?
‘’This must be it’’ Niko looked at Arabella
‘’Right. But how will we get in?’’ Questioned Arabella
‘’We can go through the front or we could find an entrance to sneak into which would be a safer route’’ Niko looked down at his gun having 5 bullets remaining ‘’If we fight them though, we could get equipment and be safer in the future’’
Arabella sighed ‘’I don’t want anyone to get hurt. I think we should sneak through and find a way in’’
‘’I like that idea, we should do that’’ Niko Nodded.
They both came up with the decision in finding another entrance, they looked around being very cautious of who is to come, hiding in the darkness, being as quiet as possible until they found an entrance to the air ducks. They didn’t know one hundred percent where their friend will be but they were going to check the place high and low.
Yuri was screaming ‘’my friends will come, you watch they will kill every single one of you!’’
‘’I like to see them try attempt to even breach the front entrance’’ Replied the guard.
Niko and Arabella were in the air ducks just above Yuri, they heard her screaming.
‘’I think we found her’’ Niko said while both of them were smiling.
‘’I am so glad’’ Replied Arabella ‘’How many are down there though?’’
‘’I can only see one and I see Yuri in the Jail cell, I hope the guard has the key.’’
‘’He better but how will we take him out to get it?’’
‘’Drop down on him and knock him out, I will do it’’
‘’No let me!’’ Arabella whispered loudly
‘’Alright, make sure you land on his head. Otherwise I will drop down and deal with him’’
Arabella quietly slotted into a hole the air ducks had and was over the guards head, she dropped down on him taking him out in the process
‘’Arabella! Oh my god, I am so glad to see you. Please get me out of here’’ Yuri was tearing up of joy, but also fear. She was scared of what they would have done if her friends weren’t there to help her.
‘’Don’t worry, we’re here to help’’ Arabella said while searching the guard.
‘’Where is Niko?’’
‘’Up here’’ Replied Niko, waving his arm down.
‘’I got it!’’ Cheered Arabella as she waved the key and began to unlock the door
‘’I am so glad you guys came, I don’t know what I would have done’’ Said Yuri.
‘’Okay, I will drop the rope down now’’ Niko said.
Niko dropped the rope down, Yuri and Arabella had climbed back up into the air ducks and got away from the prison all being safe and sound.

Here are a few of my scenes that I will use within my game, I had created this using a google image and playing around with the effects in photoshop to cartoonise it and make it my own. I then coloured the scene in.

First of all, I duplicated the layer using ctrl+J

I then pressed Ctrl, Shift + U to make it grey scale.
Duplicate the grey scaled layer.

I then inverted the layer.

Change blending mode to colour dodge.

Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and Set Radius to 8.0 Pixels.

Hit Ctrl, Shift, Alt + E to merge a new layer.

Set blending mode to multiply and then duplicate layer 2/3 times.

Single Layer

 Duplicated Layers

Now combine all layers together and rename it.

Make a new layer and drag below the named layer
Edit > Fill > Make it white and at 100% opacity and then hit OK.

.
Add a layer mask to the named layer.

Select black and whatever lines you don't want to see you can clear it away having selected the paint brush and black as a colour.

Example of half being taken off.

Make a new layer and drag it below the named layer.

Set the named layer to multiply and select the clear layer and begin colouring
As you can see the lines are not hidden when painted over.

This is the finished village scene.

The Prison

The prison here is darkened because a time where the characters are sorta blinded and I wanted to give that effect.

The Background

This is the background I used for all of my scenes, I wanted to give the viewer a grungy feel throughout my game.

Development of My Game

This is the beginning of my game, the background was hidden so I was able to see the buttons and show how they are done.

If you click the button, I will have the chance to change the button name. Having changed the button name I am able to create the codes more effectively.

This is the code required to keep it on this page.

This is one of my next scenes, as you can see the button has now moved to the top corner, having done this I am able to move on to the next page and go through the story.

This is the name of the frame, I had to name the scene each by each with a different name. Coding is very precise thing and requires a lot of care to create the next scenes. If I were to add a simple capital in the frame name and forget to add in the coding, the code will already be broken.

This is what the coding looks like for this type of scene, you will see a lot these scenes.

This is my choice scene, where you would have 2 options and one would lead to another scene and the other to a completely different one. Many of these choices do effect what will happen in the story.

Each button had to be named completely different, having done this I am able to create the code with ease.

Here is the coding required to make the multiple choice buttons.

I thought maybe having 2 options would be to easy and having 3 options would spread the story a little bit and thought of the crazy idea which was never used in the tutorial I had watched to create my scene, I experimented and it turned out very well.

Each button had to be named differently.

Here are the codes. As you can see it looks like the coding with only 2 options with plus 1. It wasn't that hard.

Quick Report

I found the process creating this game both fun and challenging, I had never created such a thing. I was able to create quite an effective game using flash. This is my first ever game I have created and I am quite proud of it. A few friends, that I won't mention laugh at my characters names and such but it's my story and my imagination comes up with the crazy thoughts.
If I were to have more time, I would definitely add some sound to it. Having done so would be more effective in my game.
